Going long in basement pit dig
I've done a 90-degree turn in the basement pit.
I decided to set aside the stairs cut/build for now, in favour of going long in the pit itself.
So now I can get into bigger slab cuts - and bigger dig-outs.
Plus - the electrician turned up, so now I have all the power and light I could need - for now.

Cutting steps from a concrete floor
Переглядів 25916 годин тому
In this exciting and dramatic episode, I cut slices out of my concrete floor to use later as steps in my stairs. I guess you could say, I'm the ultimate recycler. Or maybe I'm the ultimate tight-ass - unwilling to pay $600 a tonne to dump rubble. Either way, it's a giant step for this man and one small leap for mankind. Digging a hole in my basement floor is not just a simple matter of digging. There's the also the big question of what to do with all that dirt and concrete. I bought a new tool - a big boys' toy - designed to cut deeper into the concrete. Spoiler alert - it didn't quite go to plan though. Zoe got all the attention in the last video - and that didn't go unnoticed. Which was good for me - I got extra volunteer diggers the next day. While me and son-in-law Jarred did other work, Zoe and Hayley did some good digging in granddad's hole. Recruited slave labour for New Year digging

I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas/New Year holiday. I did - lots of food, too much alcohol and some 'help' in the hole. After a slow start, progress in the basement has been good. I now have a deeper hole - and somewhere to put the diggins. Shed basement - Christmas Eve

Christmas is coming and the shed-basement project progresses - with a minor (or maybe even major) hiccup just today. You see, I made the error of explaining next steps to her who must be obeyed ;-) and, it turns out, she didn't like my idea one little. Enjoying the videos, just a couple of questions regarding the nail gun. Is the nail driven in by a spring? Are the nails easy to purchase, I saw the gun on Temu but no mention of replacement nails. Keep up the good work.

      Thank you for watching, mate. I'm glad you like them. The nail gun has a spring it - to keep it in the recoiled position. It's operated by me pushing it forward, like a swift punch. I bought mine on Ebay, and the nails are readily available there too. It's a very handy tool - I do recommend. One tip I have is to lightly oil it every 6-10 shots and disassemble to clean occasionally.

    Great progress, I love the gate. I have two old ones in my yard with plants growing on them. Just a thought, feel free to poohoo it but could you get rid of all the concrete first and then use a posthole digger to break up the earth?

    • @big-irish-git
      @big-irish-git Місяць тому

      Hi Sharon. I did think off using the gate for plant growing - and might still. I could indeed dig the hole the way you suggest - but, two reasons I'm doing it my way (aside from because it's my way🙃) - one os because, as per usual, I get a grand idea and then make up the details on the fly - and two, because I think doing it in stages makes the planning the dirt disposal easier to plan. Also, I'd probably get bored and maybe overwhelmed if I did it in full-sized bites, if that makes sense. Thanks for watching and thanks for your comment.

      The bigger cupboard I put up first was meant for the high placement, so was shallow - and when I moved it to the left,, I did bring it forward about 100mm (with a cavity behind it. The skinny cupboard that filled the remaining space was meant for floor mounting, so was deep. I left that 100mm deeper when I cut it up, so as to use all the space, but still leave it flush with the other cupboard. So, overall, the cupboard faces are 100mm forward of original. Thanks for watching, as always.
